This was an excellent question brought up to me via Twitter.

Since you are using dropshippers, you do not have the product in hand to create videos for the products. However, there is an easy solution!

Depending on your budget, every week place an order with your dropshipper. Start with purchasing items that you know will sell right away.

By purchasing the items you accomplish 3 tasks:

  1. You will receive the products so that you can create the videos.
  2. You can double check how your dropshipper is doing and see how your customer receives these hot selling items.
  3. You now have the product in hand next time someone places an order.

Yesterday we told you about Clean Air Gardening. A Yahoo Store who really gets "it"

Lars recently conducted a fantastic interview with Practical Ecommerce where he discusses the lessons he learned along the way.

“We don't really mess with super technical approaches to SEO. We just generate lots of unique, well-written content about our products. We spend a lot of time writing unique product descriptions."

In the article he discusses search engine optimization, pay per click, marketing, expenses, employees, social media, and everything in between.

It is wonderful to see a store owner who is so open and honest about what they do and how they do it. Definitely someone we can all learn from!

I would like to take a moment to introduce you Clean Air Gardening.

This is a Yahoo Store who really gets "it"

Now what is "it?"

Yesterday I wrote a post called, "What if SEO died?"

I asked you to think about your visitors. What do your visitors want? What does your visitor need? How can you help the person that is visiting your website?

Visit Clean Air Gardening and immediately you will see that all of your questions are answered.

However, they do not stop there.

On Twitter this morning, I noticed a tweet from Clean Air stating:

"@GreenSmith Indeed. We have cricket poop, worm poop, chicken poop and even bat poop. And video! http://budurl.com/mfp2"

I had to click on the link to learn more about the poop. On the page I found great information, a helpful video, and product links for purchasing the product.

Then I started looking some more at Clean Air's Twitter page. They are offering advice and information via social networking.

This company gets "IT"

It is no wonder their business or products were featured in New York Times, Money Magazine, National Geographic, and several other well known national publications.

I wrote a blog this morning for Practical Ecommerce called, "Your Business Can Survive."

If you want a poster child website to look at that is surviving, you now know where to look!

As soon as I saw this website, I thought of Arnold Schwarzenegger and I have to say this website name in my best Schwarzenegger voice (yes it's awful).

The website....

Buttonator!

Now if you want to have fun with the name you also can grab your best Schwarzenegger voice and say, "It's da Buttonator"

Anyway, I was reading this book last night about Web 2.0 and it mentioned a website that people can go to and create buttons.

Many store owners want to create unique Add To Cart images, but have no clue how.

Well, now you can give it a try at the Buttonator website.

You can create buttons that look large, small, rounded, square, or like tabs.

You can change the font and add icons as well.

Did I mention this handy dandy tool is free?

A great little website for the do-it-yourself store owner!

I have given this topic a lot of thought lately as search engines are becoming more personalized for the end user.

One day, search engine optimization could be completely dead. If you think about it, SEO is already on life support.

No longer can you throw together a bunch of words on a website repeating your favorite keyword over and over again. Your visitors don't want this and neither do the search engines.

So what is it that search engines want for your site to be number one?

Wrong thinking.

What do your visitors want? What does your visitor need? How can you help the
person that is visiting your website?

If the person entering your website is in need of a product and you have the
product, then let's think about what else your customer needs and how you can
help them.

  1. Image - Show them the product. Give them alternative views of the
product. Give them up close views of the product. If they can not put their
hands on it physically, they will want to know what it looks like.

  2. Video - Create a video that shows them the product, how it works, what
makes it unique, and be honest.

  3. Reviews - Give an honest review of the product. Compare it to other
products. Let your customers review the product as well.

  4. Description - Write about the product. Who, what, when, why, where, and
how is a good place to start.

  5. Cross-Sell - Are there other products that can possibly help this
visitor when they purchase this product?

If you address all of the above issues:

  • You will build customer trust

  • You will increase your conversion rates

  • You will be 100% relevant about the product

  • Your customer will stay longer, shop longer, and find what they need
which shows the search engines that you are a reputable site.

  • You will naturally start ranking higher for this product

Remember, focus on your customer and the search engines will follow, whether
SEO lives or dies.

Head over to YouTube and watch a few videos. Sometimes you will hear some background music as someone talks. Sometimes you will hear a boy or a girl who loves a song that their favorite singer sang and they want everyone to hear their version. Sometimes you find a channel created by a band for their fans to find their videos.

Take Metallica for instance. My son loves their music. Me... a little too harsh. However, they created a special page on YouTube for their fans to view their videos.

Then Warner Music Group wanted any and all videos using their music off YouTube, even if it is a little girl singing her favorite song.

How does this affect store owners?

We all know the value of creating videos for your website. Videos help to increase your conversion rates.

If you have created videos using background music, you need to go back and check them out.

Are you using an artist under Warner Music? Wikipedia has a list of music groups and just giving it a quick glance... wow that is a lot of artists.

If you are, you risk the chance of either your video being pulled off completely or your entire video being muted.

You can have music with your videos. You just have to make sure you are not breaking any copyright issues.

There is a website called Creative Commons that allows you to search and find music for your videos. If you are using your videos for commercial purposes, be sure to check the box stating so in order to find music that you are legally able to use.

comScore (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released a study of U.S. video streaming activity on Inauguration Day.

The study showed that total online video viewing experienced a significant uptick between the hour of 12:00 – 1:00 PM EST, during which Barack Obama took the oath of office and delivered his inaugural address.

Compared to the baseline period, the number of unique video viewers increased 45 percent to 13 million, while the number of videos viewed grew 33 percent to 49.5 million and total minutes spent viewing video climbed 129 percent to 190 million.

The top three cable TV news sites, MSNBC.com, CNN.com, and FoxNews.com, attracted a disproportionate increase in the number of viewers compared to the Internet at large. The 4.1 million viewers who watched video on those sites during the 12-1 PM EST hour represented a fourteen-fold increase from the previous Tuesday.

Image001One of the coolest things I like about my IPhone is my Google App. When I do a search inside from Google App, it starts to pull up results before I am done typing. Most times it hits the nail on the head right away and I get what I need immediately. LOVE IT!!

Now there is a new search engine called LeapFish that does the same thing and you can search via Google, Yahoo, or MSN.

LeapFish, a multi-dimensional search engine that combines the best of the web in a single search, recently announced the release of its new click-free search interface that delivers search results as you type. The brand new search engine that captures not just relevancy but also the variety of the web, now offers one of the world's fastest search services with instantaneous results as each character of a search term is entered.

So I started playing around with LeapFish and found some other really cool stuff to play with.

First, go do a search for something. You will see the natural rankings first and then blogs that are relevant below the natural listings.

Second, look over on the right side of your screen.

Third, depending on the search... you will see News, Videos, Images, Yahoo Answers, and Shopping.

This really puts everything all together on one page saving you tons of time!!

Ok next....

Fourth, click on See More under the Videos

Fifth, place your mouse over a video.

Cool huh?? You can just move your mouse around and it will start and stop depending on where your mouse is.

Here is a short video with more information, but I say go play with it yourself and let me know what you thought about it.

Also, check out the LeapFish Blog to learn a little more about how it all works.

Last night I am in bed sick watching the UFC 91 Fight on a cable channel called Spike. I usually prerecord TV shows with my handy DVR, but this time I was watching it live. I hate those pesky commercials. With the help of a remote, I can easily fast-forward through them if I record the shows ahead of time.

So anyway, this time I cannot fast forward and a commercial comes on the TV with Howie Mandel for Buy.com

After it was over, I looked at Mike and we both said the same thing...

"Wow! That was really dirty."

Cut out the last 7-8 seconds of the commercial and you have yourself soft porn!

I realize that you want to create commercials that grab the audience and get their full attention.

After all, they sure got ours!!

But at what cost?

Do they sacrifice brand reputation?

Now, don't get me wrong... I love the occasional dirty jokes. Most times I know they are coming and/or I know whom they are coming from. I am prepared for them.

You watch the video and you tell me:

Are you heading over to shop at Buy.com?

or

Did you think ewwwww?

Yahoo has completed their changes to the Yahoo Shopping Cart as of yesterday.

I apologize for not getting this news to you sooner, but have been in bed the last 2 days with an Upper Respiratory Infection.

How do you know if your cart was affected?

The best way is to go to your store and complete the following checklist.

  1. Click on your View Cart links - Verify that they take you to the cart

  2. Add an item to your cart. Do you get the following error?

Error: order.store.yahoo.com is not a valid URL. Please point all checkout actions to order.store.yahoo.net

You have encountered a file path that is no longer valid. Please contact the store merchant to continue with your order and to report this error.

  3. Since we are making sure your cart works properly, verify that there are no security warnings popping up in your cart. This could hurt your conversion rates.

If your cart URL is not working properly or adding an item to your cart does not work, we can fix this for you. Visit our Update Add to Cart and Shopping Links page.

If you are seeing security warnings when you click on your cart, give us a call toll free 888-312-7839 and we can help you figure out what is going on.

P.S. You should add an item to your shopping cart at least once a month and verify everything is working properly. You never know when you might have a problem that could be hurting your conversion rates!

Just an hour ago I posted a blog about A Day In History from the Geek Side.

I have been fascinated by what technology Obama would bring to the White House.

Most people do not realize that when Bush took office 8 years ago, they told him that he would not be able to write emails for the next 8 years. He wrote his closest 40 friends and with that... no more emails.

Fast-forward 8 years and look at technology today. We have a new President that understands and will be utilizing the latest and greatest technology....including blogging!

Before Obama was sworn in, the new White House website was live.

"WhiteHouse.gov will be a central part of President Obama's pledge to make his the most transparent and accountable administration in American history."

As part of his transparency, Obama plans on having a weekly video chat with America, a new blog (already up and running!), and even a feedback form to communicate with President Obama.

Again, from a technology standpoint... and as a geek...

This is amazing to see how our new President is using technology to connect with Americans.

Are you connecting with the people you want to reach?

As you know, I am a huge geek... and proud of it let me tell you!!

Today is definitely a day in history for geeks. For the first time in history, CNN is providing live coverage of the Presidential Inauguration with Facebook.

You can watch this live by going to http://cnn.com/live

What is so interesting about this?

Today is the first day in history that you can actually share this historic event with your friends and with people around the entire world.

I am working from home today.... alone.

Yet sitting here watching this coverage on Facebook and watching the comments and updates coming in from Facebook, I feel like I am part of a huge community of people.

This is the power of social networking and social media!!

Never before have we seen anything like this and let me tell you from a geek standpoint... it is truly fascinating!

CNN acknowledges the Facebook users, comments to them, and even tracks different conversations using analytics just like we do.

If we can watch history being made like this today, how will our children watch tomorrow?

Here are just a few of the comments coming from Facebook:

Marshall Sponder thinks what Facebook has done with inauguration coverage is the model of future participation in most public events via Social Networks.

Syed-Ali Jafri is commenting on Facebook while watching the inauguration on CCN.com; this is our equivalent of huddling around the radio for Roosevelt's fireside chats.

Bill Wise is sitting at desk, working, watching CNN Live with facebook (amazing partnership).

Antoine Simpson This was not possible when I was growing up.

Heidi Heid is impressed that CNN's servers can handle the load. Well done CNN.

Mike Ober is wondering if CNN.com will hold-up through these events... pretty cool CNN Live with Facebook though.

Andy Rodriguez CNN is doing a fantastic job at coverinmg this, Kudos to the CNN team.

Chris Winfield super impressed by http://cnn.com/live & how they integrated with facebook. CNN continues to impress me with 'getting it'.

The comScore Media Metrix Ranks Top 50 U.S. Web Properties For December 2008 released on the 15th states:

"The holiday shopping season continued to be the main driver of online activity in December, with retail sites being the primary beneficiaries,” commented Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix. “While enticing discounts and incentives were enough to attract holiday shoppers to browse online, consumers did not open their wallets as they have in past years as online sales declined 3 percent versus last year amid the tougher economic climate."

Here are some interesting numbers for ecommerce owners:

  1. Retail – Jewelry/Luxury Goods/Accessories surged 30 percent to 25 million visitors to rank as the top-gaining category for the month.

  2. Retail – Sports/Outdoor sites also posted strong growth for the month increasing 24 percent to more than 38 million visitors

  3. Google Sites continued to lead as the most visited property in December with 149 million visitors, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 145.7 million visitors and Microsoft Sites with 125.4 million visitor

  4. Facebook and Apple Inc. both climbed two spots to #11 and #12, respectively.

  5. The holiday shopping season caused sharp increases at several retail-related properties including Shopzilla.com

  6. Platform-A led the December Ad Focus ranking, reaching 91 percent of the 190.7 million Americans online

  7. Yahoo! Network ranked second, reaching 87 percent

The big 3 auto makers (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) need money from our government,

But what are they doing for consumers?

I am not a big fan of Kia or Hyundai vehicles, but these guys are trying to make a difference. They understand that people are hurting.

Kia is offering a 2 for 1 deal. Buy 1 Kia and get a 2nd one for free.

Hyundai is offering a special Assurance Plan. You lose your income in the next year; you get to return your vehicle.

This is a lesson about knowing who you are customers are.

Whether your customers are worried about purchasing a new vehicle and losing their job or your customer is worried about not receiving their shipment on time....

You have to understand what your customer wants and needs... and then provide them a solution!

Think about your website and who your customers are. Are you providing them with solutions? Are you providing them with assurances?

Do you understand their wants and needs?

Take the time to learn. It will help you to stand out.

We had an interesting discussion during our lunch party today. While we were celebrating Steve's birthday (a.ka. Daddy), a perfect question came up!

(Oh and yes we really are a family business! My 80 year old grandfather has a Yahoo Store!)

One of our customers sent in the following question :

I am going to start a second Yahoo Store. My merchant account company said that I can use the same account for the new store. Should I use the same account or get a new one?

This was a great question and why I changed our name to 1 Choice 4.

You see my first store was called Price Buster Software. My merchant account was under the name of Price Buster Software.

Then I decided to open a second software store so that I could market to a different segment of customers. I named the second store 1 Choice 4 Software.

I loved the 1Choice 4 name so much that when I started opening new stores, I used the 1 Choice 4 name for everything: 1 Choice 4 Gifts, 1 Choice 4 Dogs, 1 Choice 4 Security, etc etc etc

But when people opened up their credit card bill after purchasing a gift from 1 Choice 4 Gifts, they would see a charge from Price Buster Software. Then they would do a chargeback because they had no clue who Price Buster Software was and why they were charging their credit card.

I would have to call the customer and explain the situation.

What a HUGE waste of time.

I had enough of that and got a new merchant account called 1 Choice 4.

This merchant account could be used for all companies within the 1 Choice family of websites.

Of course, when I started 1 Choice 4 Your Store... it fit perfectly!

So when you are choosing your name (including domains), think long term. Think about your future and what your goals are. Do you want to own multiple stores and become your own empire?

If the answer is yes, start thinking of your own "1 Choice 4" name for your future.

Have you seen the guy below on TV with the Slap Chop? He is the same guy who did the videos for the ShamWOW (and yes I want one!)

My mother and father kept telling me about the commercial. Could not remember the name of the product, but could remember the line,

"You're gonna love my nuts!"

Whoever came up with this line is a genius! You remember this stuff. You talk about it. You laugh about it over dinner. You tell your friends about it.

Here is another line.

"This is making you cry, it is making me cry. Life is hard enough as is. You don't want to cry anymore."

So now instead of fast forwarding through all the commercials on my Comcast recorder, I am actually looking for a commercial to watch!

Think about your products and services. How can you get them to remember and love your nuts?

We headed over to JCPenney's tonight after dinner to pick up some clothes. EVERYTHING was on sale. I am not talking about a little bit, I mean big SALE.

Most everything in the store was 70% off.

This sale brought on quite the discussion!!

My grandfather stated that JCPenney's might be hurting themselves offering so many of their products at 70% off. Customers will begin to expect those prices all the time.

My grandmother (with her 40 years of working at Penney's experience) explained,

"Penney's brings merchandise in and they get it out. They are clearing out inventory for spring. They have always done that. If they have to drop the prices down by 70% to move it, that is what they will do. Sears does not do this, they actually hold onto the product hoping to sell it at the higher price."

I love my grandparents. They both retired after working over 40 years in retail sales. My grandmother was one of the first female managers at JCPenney's!! So they know what they are talking about and we have some really great discussions!

This entire conversation had me thinking...

I can understand with this economy making sure to move the inventory. You certainly do not want to be stuck with it, but at what cost? Are you hurting yourself down the road by creating a fire sale now?

How does this affect the smaller retailer stores and the ecommerce store owners?

Are we just creating a panic pricing mode that will last far longer than any business can survive on?

Look at how many retail chain stores are filing bankruptcy and/or going out of business today.

What will tomorrow be like?

As some of you may know, I started my first Yahoo Store after leaving an abusive relationship with literally the clothes on my back, my boys clothes, and some of their toys. We had 10 minutes to pack and get out. We grabbed as much as we could and started a new life together.

That was almost 10 years ago and sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday.

Let me introduce you to Daniela and her family. Brandon, age 6, Daniela, age 9 and little Evelyn age 4. Daniela recently divorced her husband after years of physical abuse. In recent years her mortgage went unpaid and she's lost her house. Her youngest child has Down's Syndrome.

As soon as I read about this woman, I knew that I had to reach out and help. I remember being in those shoes and it is a very scary place.

You can read more about her story and how the online networking community has come together to give this family a new start, but please do more than just read.

If you can help out, please do so.

Imagine what we could do for this family if we all pitched in just $5.00.

WE COULD MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

According to comScore, "Americans View 34 Percent More Online Videos in November 2008 Compared to Year Ago"

Google is still the monster with 5.1 billion videos viewed. That is 40% of the market!

Here are some other cool facts:

  • 77 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.

  • The average online video viewer watched 273 minutes of video.

  • 97 million viewers watched 5.1 billion videos on YouTube.com (52.3 videos per viewer).

  • 52.5 million viewers watched 371 million videos on MySpace.com (7.1 videos per viewer).

  • The duration of the average online video was 3.1 minutes.

  • The duration of the average online video viewed at Hulu was 11.9 minutes, higher than any other video property in the top ten.

People love to watch videos! However, most people get scared at the idea of creating a video in the first place. They are typically worried about the quality of the video.

DON'T BE!

Your video does not have to be 100% perfect.

If you show your personality and provide great content in your video, they will be watching you and not the quality of the video.

If you haven't heard yet, the Twitter community has been hit hard with Spam!

There are spammer messages being sent using direct messages from people on your friends list. These messages have links that take you to a site that grabs your User Name and Password for Twitter.

Then it messages your friends with the Spam message and unfollows your friends on Twitters.

This is the first time I have heard of anything like this on Twitter and it has effected quite a bit of the users.

If you start getting the same Direct Messages from multiple people, those are probably Spam Messages. Do NOT click on the links, but please message that user and let them know their account may have been hit.

If your friend gives you a link that you want to check out and you are unsure if it is really from them, send them a message to be on the safe side.

We have to remember that no matter where we are online, we have to protect ourselves. Make sure you are using the latest and greatest software available to protect yourself and your computer.

If you haven't changed your password on Twitter yet, you might want to go do so right now just to be on the safe side.

If you don't... as colderICE stated on Twitter

"That is what happens when you don't use protection."

Now of course that little comment turned into a conversation of things that Momma forgot to mention when she was teaching us about the birds and bees.

So next time you talk to your kids.... you might want to mention Spam, Phishing, Network Marketers, and telemarketers too :)

Parents can never be too careful!

A new comScore press release is out with outstanding information!

Sports and Fitness this year was the fast growing category up 18%. Why?

"The category continues to benefit from consumers’ focus on health and fitness and consumers feeling more comfortable purchasing higher-priced fitness equipment, such as treadmills and elliptical machines, online."

Second fastest growing category - Video Games, Consoles & Accessories, which grew 14 percent on continued demand for popular consoles, such as the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

The Wii seemed to be the big seller this holiday season and everyone wanted to get their hands on one. Well, if you have ever played a Wii game... you would understand why.

It is VERY COOL!

At first, it seemed that EBay sellers were quite happy. They were getting great traffic, great leads, which led to great sales.

Fast-forward and we hear prices going up, harder to sell, and not too happy customers.

Then on December 6th an article called "Mercent CEO Explains eBay Ad Strategy for Volume Retailers" came out explaining why EBay is bringing in the big boys.

Problem: The community that built EBay is not real happy about this move at all.

EBay saw a decline in visitors over the holiday season as well as in sales.

Christopher Lawton
last week stated:

"Mr. Donahoe's most significant move has been to make eBay less of an auction house and more like Amazon, Walmart.com and Sears.com, selling fixed-priced goods, which consumers now prefer for speed and convenience."

Wasn't EBay started to be different then Amazon, Walmart.com and Sears.com?

Also stated:

"Customers are leaving for fixed-priced sites where eBay has less of an edge, and because of continued problems with unscrupulous sellers"

So in other words, they tried to make themselves like the other sites and people are still leaving?

Perhaps EBay needs to get back to the basics. They became who they are today by allowing the "little guy" to get online and sell their products. They kept their pricing levels low so that anyone could sell online.

Now that they are bringing in the big guys, how can the little guys compete?

So people come to me all the time and ask:

Why do you recommend Yahoo Stores?

Because Yahoo does remember the little guy and helps them to become a successful business owner. When they become successful, it does not affect all the new guys and gals just getting started.

I used to be that single mom in her living room trying to sell products to support my two boys and the pricing did not change all the time.

I did not have to pay per product. I could add more inventory for my customers to find and increase my sales. My store could have up to 50,000 products.

How would I know if a product would actually sell until I added it onto my website? I had no clue! Luckily I didn't have to pay to learn.

Speaking of sales, when I sold those products I paid Yahoo a transaction fee of 1-1.5% not 10-15% that EBay charges. MORE PROFIT FOR MEEEEEE!!!

There were so many little differences with the Yahoo Store that made me who I am today.

I hope EBay goes back to remembering who made them what they are today.

Last night was wonderful! Mike and I had family, friends, and dogs around us as we played cards and games all night long. Combined we have SIX children between us and they are between the ages of 14 to 22 years old. We had quite a houseful and it was awesome!

What a perfect way to bring in a new year!

As you know, with a New Year... comes the New Year Resolutions.

My resolution for 2009 is to bring more education to our store owners.

Education is power!! I love educating people as much as I love learning new things (and I am a full-time student).

Why do I love education so much?

Education can help make dreams come true!

If I can teach you something that will make your dream come true... WOW!

This is the best business I could have ever hoped to have.

The hardest thing about those dang resolutions though... is making sure you stick by them!

Well......

We have new videos coming out soon with Worldwide Brands on search engine optimization, we have new e-books coming out for ecommerce owners, and I am looking forward to partnering with other writers and sharing their experiences as well.

2009 will be our best year yet when it comes to education and I cannot wait!!

I wish you and your family the very best New Year.

P.S. What is your New Year's Resolution and what are you doing to ensure that you keep it?
