Google can give you lots of information about your website including:
  • How does Google see your site?
  • How many people found your site through search?
  • Does your website contain errors?
  • Who links to your website?
  • How many pages have been added to the index?
  • and much more
It's simple to sign up and only takes a matter of minutes.

Let's verify one of our websites now. First we are given several different options of verifying that we own the domain.

I am going to choose the meta tag option. If you already have Google Analytics hooked up, chose that option instead.

Once I clicked on Add a meta tag to your site's home page, the following directions came up:

I am going to copy the meta information and put it into my website. Since I am doing this for a blog, I am going into my Blogger account, clicking on Template for that blog,

Right after the meta tags and before the head closing tag, I am going to paste my meta tag. Then I am going to publish by clicking on "Save Template Changes"

Now I am going to go back to Google and click on the Verify button just below my instructions.

Now you are all set :)

Check out the video below from Google with more information about Google Webmaster Central and how it can help you.

According to a recent report by comScore, for the holiday season-to-date, $11.64 billion has been spent online, marking a 13-percent increase versus the corresponding days last year.

Black Friday (November 26) saw $648 million in online sales, making it the heaviest online spending day to date in 2010 and representing a 9-percent increase versus Black Friday 2009.

Thanksgiving Day (November 25), traditionally a lighter day for online holiday spending, achieved a strong 28-percent increase to $407 million.

“Although Black Friday is known for the flurry of activity occurring in brick-and-mortar retail stores, online shopping is increasingly becoming the refuge of those preferring to avoid the crowds and long lines,” said comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni. “The $648 million in online spending this Black Friday represents the heaviest online spending day of the season-to-date and a solid increase over last year’s Black Friday. Interestingly, we are also seeing consumers beginning to buy online in a more meaningful way on Thanksgiving Day, which has historically seen low buying activity.”

Other interesting information:
  • The number of visitors to coupon sites on Black Friday grew 4 percent versus year ago to 3.6 million visitors, while the total number of visits to the category increased 16 percent to 7.4 million.
  • BlackFriday.info was the most visited coupon site on Black Friday with 630,000 unique visitors, followed by CouponCabin.com (543,000), RetailMeNot.com (332,000 visitors) and Groupon.com (332,000).
  • ShopLocal.com ranked as the most visited comparison shopping site on Black Friday with 2.1 million visitors, up 45 percent versus year ago.

We all know that speed is important. In fact, Google announced on their blog recently that speed was just one of my many factors used to determine where your website will rank in the search engines.

So what is one of the bigger problems slowing sites down?

Images.

While there are plenty of tools out there for optimizing your images, we are pretty impressed with Yahoo! Smush It.

From the Smuch It website,
"Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files. It is a "lossless" tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality. After Smush.it runs on a web page it reports how many bytes would be saved by optimizing the page's images and provides a downloadable zip file with the minimized image files."

Check out this video tutorial below where we show you step by step how to use this great image optimization tool!

With the holidays JUST around the corner, more shoppers will be using their mobile phones than ever for their retail shopping. By the year 2015, 119 BILLION dollars will be spent via mobile shopping.

These shoppers expect to do much more than find product info or a nearby store via the mobile web.

According to eMarketer,
"While many retailers focus on the price-comparison ability of smartphones, which allows in-store shoppers to check competitors’ prices, web users surveyed by Sterling Commerce said the single most important shopping function of a mobile phone was the ability to check whether a product was in stock."
  • 62% Want to check availability
  • 57% Want to look up prices
  • 49% Are looking for the nearest location
  • 48% Want mobile updates on their order status
  • 46% Want to locate out-of-stock items
  • 46% Want to conduct product reviews while shopping in the store

So what are the most important uses for shopping with their mobile phones ?

According to Coda research consultancy, U.S. mobile commerce sales hit $1.20 billion in 2009 and is expected to grow to $2.42 billion this year.

This is great news for online retailers that are prepared. However, according to Shop.org 62 percent of retailers have either not yet begun or are only in the early stages of planning a mobile strategy.

Not good.

So let's do something about it!

Join me today for a new webinar with Unbound Commerce. They will be providing insights as to what buyers are doing with their mobile phones, and how you can benefit from your customers’ adoption of mobile to drive increased revenues this holiday season.

This session will focus on several specific business impacts available today and on case studies where online merchants are driving improved results.

We get started at 1:00 PM Eastern so make sure to sign up now by going to:

Today is an important day. As the daughter of a retired Marine, you understand the importance of supporting our military.

I had hoped to bring you a special gift for today but, went to the hospital yesterday for a shot in my SI Joint. Instead of one, they gave me two and it has put me in bed and unable to move very far. It's a temporary setback :)

Watch your emails tomorrow though. I will be giving you something too good to miss out on. However, you have to do something for me in order to take advantage of this special offer.

I want you to give back and support our veterans.

I promise to give you more details tomorrow.

Until then, thank you to all of those men and women who have served to protect us yesterday, tomorrow, and today.

As I looked out my window and see snow coming down and covering my pasture I became startled as I came across the following information.

Did you know it is only 49 days until Christmas? Scary.

According to Google, 73% of consumers have started researching their holiday purchases and 89% of those consumers started their shopping online.

Google has a wonderful website, "Think Holiday with Google."

This website shows the interest over time for black friday, holiday search trends, and information from the Google Retail Blog.

Fun Facts - Did you know that Saturdays bring in the most traffic for local stores but, online Tuesday is the most popular day to shop?

More interesting information from Google Retail Blog:
  1. "Early shopper gets the gifts" -- shoppers are researching and purchasing earlier than ever
  2. "The connected consumer" -- desktops and smartphone are integral to the purchase process of today's shopper
  3. "New, hot products" -- fastest rising search terms reveal shoppers' interests
Use the information from these websites to increase your traffic and sales.

Remember, it's not just enough to bring them into your website. We need to convert them as well!

Read more about how the design of your website can effect your conversions and rankings.

Plus, don't forget to add your comment to our Feature Friday post and win up to $500 in add-ons for your Yahoo Store!
