The big question... Do you have a mobile version of your website?

If not, why?

Typically the answer is... I don't have that many customers shopping on our website with mobile devices.

My response... Have you checked?

Recent response.... No, I just know.

Why bother thinking you know how your customers are shopping when your analytics will tell you very specifically yes or no?

Let's learn how to find out using Google Analytics.

1. Log in and change your date range. Go back to the first of the year.

2. Now on the left, let's look at visitors, and then mobile devices.

3. Let's look at this month by month

Wowsers. Look at that increase over the last 10 months for this online store owner.

4. Let's really make it interesting. Just below the graph, click on Ecommerce.

Now we have some information!

2.17% of this store's traffic comes from Mobile Devices and 1.48% of this store's revenue comes from Mobile as well.

This online store usually converts 4.12% of their customers but, on mobile only 1.07%.

However, if we look at the per visit value, (which I don't show numbers unless I have express permission from our customer), it was almost as high as those visiting the website.

Now, imagine what would happen if we created a mobile website for this store owner and their mobile visitors starting converting at 4.12% as well.

The average value of a mobile user for this store was 162.61%. They are worth more money.

Shouldn't we spend a little more money on them?

I agree. This is why we helped this online store owner open their brand new mobile website.

Are you ready to do the same?

Have you ever heard of the Bob and Tom Show?

It's a morning talk show that I listen to when I take Justin to school in the mornings.

Interesting conversation yesterday about Google Instant and it really made me think about how the "rest of the world" views how Google Instant works.

The conversation basically went something like this -

If I type in W, I am going to get "We want boys."

No, that isn't the way it works. You have to type in "We want" first.

You and I understand how Google Instant works. We live for this. However, the common every day Google user doesn't understand how it all works and the perception is quite interesting.

So let's learn what really happens when we type in W

We definitely don't get we want boys :) In fact, look at what came up when we typed in "we want."

Have you talked with family or friends about Google Instant? What were their thoughts on how it all worked? What strange things did they think they would find after typing a letter or two?

Last Tuesday I brought you some really cool tools you can use to find out where your customers are clicking and reading and everything in between.

Well, 3 days later Google drops analytics overlay and instead we get this awesome in-page analytics.

If you haven't started using it yet... let's log into Google and start using it right now!

Once inside, look on the left go and click on content. Then on the right, you will see Click Patterns - In-Page Analytics Beta.

This is really fun. Open up a new tab and go to your live website. Google Analytics follows you. Whatever page you click on, Google tells you:
  • How many page views you have had
  • How many unique views
  • Time on Page
  • Bounce Rate
  • View where people are clicking
  • and much much more
So let's play with this on a new blog I created to share my quilting adventures with the world.

The Wedding Quilt I made for Dusten was were popular so let's see what happened when people came to this page.

70% clicked to go to my home page and 4.3% clicked to learn about the giveaways.

Cool right?

So how can you use this information?

Let's say you have on your home page the following layout:

You learn that Special 2 is not clicked on at all and the purple product is only clicked on 1% of the time while the other products are clicked on 9% of the time.

Now you have data to make decisions!

Change out Special 2 to something else that will get customers to click and switch out the purple product with another feature item that your customers are looking for.

Using Filters
The filters can really tell you a lot about your traffic! For instance, let's take a look at our top navigation bar.

Let's take a look at what we have going on.

Only 4.2% are clicking on our Portfolio link.

Now let's filter those results!

We chose to look at just our visitors coming in using keywords having to do with yahoo store design.

Now the Portfolio link is clicked on 23%. Different priorities for different keyword phrases.

What can you do with this information?

What keywords drive the most traffic? What keywords drive the most revenue to your store?

Where are those customers clicking and what's important to them?

Join me tomorrow for a new webinar where we discuss how your web design affects your search engine rankings!

I was recently talking to a client about SEO. He wondered why he wasn't getting any traffic to his website and really wondering...

Why am I not ranking where I want?

He told me that he has been working hard on getting links to his store and just didn't understand why he wasn't getting anywhere.

After looking at his website I knew the reason.

Sample description:

Size: 40x60

That's it.

I told him, "You have to stop putting tires on a car that doesn't have an engine. If you want this car to run, you better put in an engine first. You need content."

Then he asked, "Well, what if I start paying for traffic instead."

I looked at his analytics.

I replied, "That would be like adding a new shiny paint job to the car that doesn't run. You still need an engine; otherwise you are not going to get anywhere."

He was already getting traffic but, not one single person was converting. So why would you want to spend tons of money sending more traffic to your website so that none of those will convert either?

He finally understood.

He needed content.

Check out our bi-monthly newsletter where I go into more detail on how to add great content to your website.

Group buying websites have become the big web trend in 2010 and with good reason (view CNN article).

Consumers are looking for a deal!

These websites offer products and/or services at huge discounts, usually within a time frame.

But we wanted to learn...
  1. Who are the big players out there and how are they different?
  2. How do store owners know which one is right for their business or even if they should do it at all?
  3. If a business is offering their product at 50-70% off or more, what are they hoping to get out of the experience?
  4. Holidays are coming fast, and we're all consumers too.  What should I know as a consumer shopping at these sites?
  5. and much much more.
Today we will get our answers! We are interviewing Jeremy Kugel, CEO of Jasmere.com.

Jasmere seeks out lesser-known specialty retailers that deserve national attention. Each sale lasts just 24 hours, and the more people who buy, they lower the price for all.

Join me at 6:00 PM Eastern as we learn more about group buying and how it can help your business grow by going to:

http://www2.webmasterradio.fm/chat/

See you there!

Oh yeah before I go... don't forget you still have time to win up to $500 in add ons for your store!

One of the most crucial aspects of running your online business, is knowing what is going on with your online store. With the holidays right around the corner, it will be more important than ever.
    • Are your customers able to access your online site?
    • Are your customers able to checkout?
    • Are you able to access your email?
Yahoo maintains a System Status page that will alert you to any and all problems happening with your website day or night. I admit, sometimes they are a little slow to report problems but... they do report them and provide updates for store owners.

It is very easy to be alerted whenever there is a problem via email or text message. In fact, just to be safe, I do both.

    Here is how:

    1. Visit the Yahoo Small Business System Status Page

    2. Click the button on the right to create an alert

    3. Sign In

    4. In the settings, make sure you click to have alerts come to you as they happen.

    5. In the settings, choose how you want your alerts to come to you. Choose email, Yahoo Messenger, and Mobile for full alert status. You may have to set up mobile but, this is very quick and painless.

    6. MAKE SURE TO SAVE YOUR SETTINGS.

    7. That's it. Get ready to be in the know whenever anything happens to your store.

    Guess what?

    It's Feature Friday again!!! WOHOOOOO

So what the heck is Feature Friday?

Every Friday we create a blog post entitled Feature Friday.

Every Friday you will go to our website 1 Choice 4 Your Store and pick out one feature that you would really like to add to your Yahoo Store. I recommend starting out with our Top 15 New Yahoo Store Add-ons or visiting our Build Your Own Package Page to see a full list of all the add-ons we offer.

Then come back to this Feature Friday blog post and leave a comment. Tell us which feature you would want for your store to increase traffic and conversions.

It can be any feature we offer up to $500. You could choose a new blog design, rating and reviews, tabbed item descriptions, or up to $500 off a new store design just in time for Christmas!

On Monday during our radio show Ecom Experts, we will draw a lucky number, and look for that comment number on our blog.

Whoever wins will have their desired feature added to their Yahoo Store - FREE.

For those of you that don't win, we promise to give that feature to you at 25% off until the next winner is chosen.

Then we will do it again each and every Friday.

Last week Marcia  won Multiple Product Images for her store and you get 25% off!
