I have been asked this question quite a bit recently and thought I should probably answer the question in more detail on our blog.

Problem:
You create a brand new website and you want to get the search engines finding this website right away. What do you do?

Possible Solution:
Start submitting your website to every single directory and search engine known to mankind.

Yes, this will let the search engines know that you are here. However, it could take your website longer to get indexed this way. Here is what Google has to say on the subject:

"Inclusion in Google's search results is free and easy; you don't even need to submit your site to Google. Google is a fully automated search engine that uses software known as "spiders" to crawl the web on a regular basis and find sites to add to our index. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed in our results aren't manually submitted for inclusion, but found and added automatically when our spiders crawl the web."

So how do you get your website found on other websites for Google to find faster?

Possible Solution:
Start getting as many links to your website as possible by trading links with everyone and anyone.

Again, this is not really what Google had in mind either. If you want natural rankings, then you have to work on getting links to your website naturally.

Here are a few recommendations:
Since you have an ecommerce website, it would be only natural to have your products listed in different shopping search engines. This would also help you to get links into your website.

Since you have a new ecommerce website, it would be only natural to write a press release announcing the opening of your new online store. This would also help you to get links into your website.

Now it is time to throw in the secret sauce that I use for our customers and let me tell you, this works the fastest EVERY single time. Plus, it's all natural!

The Secret Sauce Recipe
Create your own blog for your ecommerce website.

BUT

Instead of using Wordpress software, use Blogger.

Yes, Blogger is not as fancy as Wordpress and perhaps you do not get as many fancy shmancy features.

However, Blogger is owned by Google and it is amazing how quickly your posts will get picked up!

PLUS

You NEVER have to worry about updating the software, installing important upgrades, and hackers injecting SEO killers either. Blogger takes care of it all for you so that you can concentrate on your ecommerce website which is FAR more important.

During setup, make sure to set up your Blogger account to FTP directly to your ecommerce URL.

Now all you need is the final secret ingredient, POST UNIQUE CONTENT DAILY!

Yeah, I screamed that. Sorry. But it is the most important part of the recipe. You cannot just throw up a blog and forget about it, especially in the beginning. You need to be writing on your blog once a day with great new fresh unique content.

This will help Google learn you have a wonderful new website, you are adding fresh content, Google needs to constantly be indexing your website for the latest updates, and other search engines will fall in line as well.

Follow these tips and your website will usually get picked up faster than a quarter dropped in a casino!

P.S.

I have created a video for Yahoo Store owners showing you step by step how to set up your FTP settings with the Yahoo Store or we can design and set up your blog for you.

Yeah, I have to agree that using Blogger does provide some quick SEO feedback from Google. I've definitely seen the difference between other sites, though I still like Wordpress features in the long run.

I think the main thing is to decide, do you want to focus on your ecommerce website or your blog software. If you want to focus on the ecommerce side and not worry about the blogging software, upgrades, and features... Blogger is the way to go. Plus, Blogger is adding more features all the time.

What is the advantage of setting up your Blogger account to FTP directly to your ecommerce URL. I don't really understand this, can you please explain? What does FTP to your URL mean? Is it bad to have the blogspot.com in your blog address? Thank you!

Great questions!

If you publish your blog to another URL (like blogspot.com) then Google doesn't see that as you updating your website. In fact, you are updating the website Blogspot.com

When you FTP to your own URL, that means that the files get published to your own URL. Google sees that you are adding new pages to your URL (website), Google sees that you are keeping your own URL fresh with unique content, and Google see that they must keep coming back to your URL in order to keep up with you.

If you have more questions, please feel free to ask!

I have tried for life of me to set up Blogger to FTP directly to my URL. I have watched your tutorial over and over again and I just cant do it. Part of my problem is that I don't have a Yahoo store so I am getting bits and pieces from your tutorial and trying to apply them in my situation.

Also, I have my blog set up just the way I like and I am worried that I may undo all of my hard work. If I FTP to my URL will I lose my current layout/template, can I get it back? And will I lose all of my existing posts?

Oh how I wish you did tutorials that were not specific to Yahoo stores. Won't you consider helping the "rest" of us too? LOL! You have so much great information that the "rest" of us could benefit from.

Many times I have searched your products and services and thought I could use that.

I agree. It would be wonderful if you could provide FTP tips for non-Yahoo stores as well. Thank you in advance.

I would love to help out more with FTP information for non-Yahoo stores. The problem is, depending on the hosting account... the ftp information is going to be different for each one :(

The best advice I can give you, is to go to your hosting provider when you get to a step that you are unsure of (like creating a subdomain) and check your hosting providers information for the steps on how to complete the task.

Very sorry guys :(

Thank you Shawna for all the help. I do have one last question if you don't mind. What is the difference in ftp to your url and publish on a custom domain? Blogger gives you this option too. Would Google see this as updating your website if you go this route?

The custom domain route is if you wanted a new URL like FavorsWithLoveBlog.com

Great if you were a Blog website or your website was purely surrounded by the blog itself.

But again, doesnt help your current domain.

"Start submitting your website to every single directory and search engine known to mankind."

DO NOT do this!! Submit a sitemap instead. This article - as so many 'SEO' advice online - contains information that could actually HURT your SEO efforts. Even Google recommends not submitting links for inclusion. If your site is structured correctly and you submit a sitemap, the search engines will find you - and faster than link submission.

Are you sure read the entire article? The whole point of the article is that you do not want to do things that will hurt your SEO efforts - including submit your site to every directory known to mankind :)
