WOW this is huge. Finally we have some answers on whether or not Google wants unique meta descriptions for each and every page on your store and guess what...they do!

There has always been this confusion...yes Google wants them...no they do not want meta descriptions. We have ALWAYS said to put them in. Yahoo is one that has always wanted these unique meta tags to get indexed properly. So why not do it?

Now you have even more reason for giving each and every page in your store a unique meta tag description....Google wants it too!

Google's Vanessa Fox recently responded in a Google Group post...

"Looking at your site in the search results, it appears that your pages
would be well served by meta description tags. For most queries, the
generated snippet is based on where the query terms are found on the
page, and in those cases, your results are fine. But for some more
generic queries, where a logical snippet isn't found in the text, the
generated snippet seems to be coming from the first bits of text from
the page -- in this case, boilerplate navigation that is the same for
every page.

US online retail sales this holiday season will reach $27 billion, a 23 percent increase over last year, according to Forrester Research, Inc. Almost one-fifth of the nearly 4,000 consumers surveyed say that the Internet will be the place where they shop the most during the holidays. Read here...

With gas prices moderating and three in four homes nationwide connected to the Internet, a Purdue University retail expert predicts store and online holiday sales will ring up significant increases this year. "The outlook is very positive for retailers this holiday shopping season, but that is especially true for e-holiday retailing," says Richard Feinberg, director of the Purdue Retail Institute and Center for Customer-Driven Quality. "Online sales will increase 20 percent this year compared to last year." Read here...

Why it is important to keep your website clean, flash, and javascript free as much as possible...
We always tell our customers to be very careful of using too much flash or javasripting on their retail sites. Why? Many shoppers will search from work where older computers can not handle the latest and greatest the web has to offer. Many companies in an effort to cut down employees surfing from work also will block and/or remove flash and javascripting from these computers. We need store owners to understand how important little things like this can hurt their website. So to help keep you informed we did a search on google news for online shopping costs employers. Important Tip
So what happens when they come across a website with flash and/or javascripting? Some will see x's and some screens will freeze up. This could hurt you from getting sales. NEVER give your customers a reason to not buy from you. Did you know it can also add to your total file size for your pages and can hurt your SEO too?

Our advice
Either stay away from it completely or use the absolute minimum needed to accomplish your task.

Duplicate content is one way of never getting to the top of the search engines. Unique content is the only way to go....yet this is where most store owners never make the journey to.

When you are adding hundreds (if not thousands) if products into your store, this can seem like a very time consuming task. But store owners most realize that this is as important as setting up your merchant account to accept credit cards.

Remember, you are in this business for the long run. Why spend all your money to go out of business 6 months later? Real people make real money online with ecommerce stores and you can too.

It will not happen overnight. It will not be easy. It IS possible.

We found a great article about duplicate content. Just a few snippets...

"Dup content issue #1; reusing manufacturers product description is a common issue"

"Why do search engines care about duplication? User experience, and they dont want to show the same content over and over again for the same query. An other issue is if they only crawl the dup content, they wont have any differentiate with other content (but this is less of an issue). The most important thing is to show the content of the originating source. Where does Yahoo! get rid of dups? At every point in the pipeline, including crawl time, index time, and query time, they prefer to remove dups at the time of the query. They try to limit two urls per host in the serps."
