Every company goes through slow periods...yes every company. Sometimes this happens because they sell seasonal type of products. Sometimes this happens because of holidays. Sometimes this happens because people are worried about spending money. We are seeing alot of this right now in the ecommerce industry as a whole. With the rising prices of gas and the current events going on
overseas....people tend to tighten up the funds.



So what should you do to get through these periods?


WORK!!!

Write content!!! - This is one of the most important aspects of your online marketing. Yet so many store owners ignore this detail. They do not have the time when starting their business to write
good solid UNIQUE content. So they use the manufacturers description and call it a day. How many other people also have copied those descriptions? If you get your products from a big company .... you are not the only company to use those descriptions. The search engines do not want to see the same boring text on each and every site. Only a few of those will make it to the top of the search engines. The companies that actually use unique descriptions have a much easier time getting to the top as they offer what those other companies do not....UNIQUE CONTENT. Do not think that duplicate content only applies to you opening 2 stores with the exact same products and descriptions. Duplicate content extends to you and every single other company online using the exact same descriptions.


Would you like an idea of just how many sites there are using the same content?


Take a sentence of the manufactures description and copy this now. Now go to www.google.com and paste the text into the search field. Place quotes around this text and hit enter.


Now my very first store was selling software. HUGE competition. Microsoft Office was always a great seller. So let me do a comparison.


I found the product description for Microsoft Office 2003 Pro by going to:

http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Microsoft%20Office%20Professional%20Edition%202003%20Software:1991318896


Now I take the first sentence which is "Office 2003 Editions can help organizations and their employees transform information into impact" and put it into google.


Results 1 - 10 of about 15,700 for "Office 2003 Editions can help organizations and their employees transform information into impact".


Over 15 THOUSAND!!! Thank god I am not in that field anymore *laughing*


Just to make sure. I am going to take the 3rd paragraph and use the first sentence for my search. Maybe that sentence I chose was used for something else.


Web Results 1 - 10 of about 844 for "Streamline communication and collaboration between internal and external team members using the desktop productivity programs that many people rely on every
day". (0.19 seconds)



Hmmm 844 websites are using the exact same description.


Can someone say duplicate content?


Google is your monster that you need to be happy. Almost half of your customers will come from this 1 single search engine. Google makes alot of money on your advertising dollars. How much are they worth? Yeah you helped them to become rich and they want to stay #1 and keep making the big bucks. If their customers searched for something and found the exact same thing over and over and over again....that customer will go on to another search engine to find what they want. Google loses money. So with 844 sites having the exact same content....how many of those will get in the top 10? Out of the 844 sites that we found above...not one came up in the top 10 in my search for Google for Microsoft Office 2003 Pro. Not one. What did come up was 10 unique websites giving me an overview of the product, price comparison for the product, review of the product, etc.

Each of those top 10 results had UNIQUE content.


Does your site??????


I know what you are thinking. I have soooooooo many products and rewriting all of them would take me forever.

To that I ask you.......


1. How much money are you paying in advertising so that you can be on the first page?


2. How much money would you save if you were listed in the top 3?


3. Do you want to continue using the same boring descriptions and throw away your profits. Yes you are throwing away your profits. Let me show you:


a. You make this much in sales each month -


b. From those sales you make this much in profit -


c. During that month you spent this much in Pay Per Click -


So if my answer to A is 100. My answer to B is 20. My answer to C is 10....What a waste of good money.


So now that I have opened your eyes....We should cover what you should do now.

Building a new Ecommerce store is not difficult, but growing, marketing, and expanding your online store can be difficult if you do not have the tools necessary to be successful.

Here are a few tips to follow:

1. The first thing you need is knowledge. The world of online marketing is changing constantly as technology improves and more people have access to the Internet. You must keep up with the information necessary to continue to market your products to your customers.

2. Be organized. Develop a marketing plan that you can review. State your goals. Monitor and revise your marketing plan as necessary to accomplish your goals.

3. Ask for help. If something is not working, ask why. Contact other Yahoo store owners and ask them what has worked and what hasn’t. Look for forums that you can join. And call us! We are here to help.

Google currently indexes over 8 billion web pages. However, before these pages were placed in the index, they were each crawled by a special spider known as the GoogleBot. Unfortunately, many web masters do not know about the internal workings of this virtual robot.

In fact, Google actually uses a number of spiders to crawl the Web. You can catch these spiders by examining your log files.

This article will attempt to reveal some of the most important Google spiders, their function, and how they affect you as a web master. We'll start with the well-known GoogleBot.

GoogleBot

Googlebot, as you probably know, is the search bot used by Google to scour the web for new pages. Googlebot has two versions, deepbot and freshbot. Deepbot is a deep crawler that tries to folow every link on the web and download as many pages as it can for the Google index. It also examines the internal structure of a site, giving a complete picture for the index.

Freshbot, on the other hand, is a newer bot that crawls the web looking for fresh content. The Google freshbot was implemented to take some of the pressure off of the GoogleBot. The freshbot
recalls pages already in the index and then crawls them for new, modified, or updated pages. In this way, Google is better equipped to keep up with the ever-changing Web.

This means that the more you update your web site with new, quality content, the more the Googlebot will come by to check you out.

If you'd like to see the Googlebot crawling around your web property more often, you need to obtain quality inbound links. However, there is also one more step that you should take. If you
haven't already done so, you should create a Google Sitemap for your site.

Creating a Google sitemap allows you to communicate with Google, telling them about your most important pages, new pages, and updated pages. In return, Google will provide you with some
valuable information as well. Google Sitemaps will tell you about pages it was unable to crawl and links it was unable to follow. This allows you to pinpoint problems and fix them so that you can gain increased exposure in the search results.

The next Google bot in our lineup is known as the MediaBot.

MediaBot - used to analyze Adsense pages

MediaBot is the Google crawler for Adsense Publishers. Mediabot is used to determine wich ads Google should display on Adsense pages.

Google recommends that webmasters specifically add a command in their robots.txt file that grants Mediabot access to their entire site. To do this, simply enter the following code into your robots.txt file:

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google*
Disallow:

This will ensure that the MediaBot is able to place relevant Adsense ads on your site.

Keep in mind that ads can still be shown on a page if the MediaBot has not yet visited. If that is the case, the ads chosen will be based on the overall theme of the other pages on the site. If no ads can be chosen, the dreaded public service announcements are displayed instead.

There is a strong debate over whether or not the MediaBot is giving websites with Adsense an advantage in the search engines.

Even Matt Cutts has confirmed that the Adsense Mediabot has indexed webpages for Google's main index. He states, "Pages with AdSense will not be indexed more frequently. It's literally just a crawl cache, so if e.g. our news crawl fetched a page and then Googlebot wanted the same page, we'd retrieve the page from the crawl cache. But there's no boost at all in rankings if you're in AdSense or Google News. You don't get any more pages crawled either."

Matt Cutts claims that your website does not get any advantage by using Adsense. However, in my mind, simply getting your site updated in and of itself is an advantage.

This is very similar to Google Analytics, which also promotes a slightly higher degree of spider activity.

Those who run Google Analytics on their site can expect additional spider activity.

However, you certainly shouldn't depend on any of these tools for getting your site indexed. The key to frequent spidering is having quality inbound links, quality content, and frequent updates.

Have images on your site? If so, you have likely been visited by our next Google spider, the ImageBot.


ImageBot - used to crawl for the Image Search

The Imagebot prowls the Web for images to place in Google's image search. Images are ranked based upon their filename, surrounding text, alt text, and page title.

If you have a website that is primarily image based, then you would definitely want to optimize your images to receive some extra Google traffic.

On the other hand, some web sites may not benefit from Google image search. In most cases, the traffic from the Image search engine is very low quality and rarely converts into buyers. Many
people are often just looking for images that they can swipe. So, if you want to save some bandwidth, use your robots.txt file to block ImageBot from accessing your image directory.

One of the few exceptions I would make is if you have a site dedicated to downloadable images.

Our final bot is completely dedicated to the Google Adwords program.

AdsBot - Checks Adwords landing pages for quality
useragent: AdsBot-Google

AdsBot is one of Google's newest spiders. This new crawler is being used to analyze the content of advertising landing pages, which helps determine the Quality score that Google assigns to your ads.

Google uses this Quality score in combination with the amount you are willing to bid to determine the position of your ads. Therefore, ads with a high quality score can rank higher even if other advertisers are paying more than you.

This is one of Google's many efforts to ensure that they are delivering the best results to their users.
Can you still block being spidered? Of course, but it will lower your overall Adwords quality score, which could end up lowering the positioning of your ads. If possible, it is best to give AdsBot complete access to your site.

Today's Google bots are becoming more advanced all the time. However, nothing beats relevant, quality, updated content. Deliver that and the search engines will eat it up.

Blog is short for Web Log or Weblog and the Blogosphere is
the online blog world, some parts of which are hyperlinked
extensively to each other.


This is the Wikipedia definition: Blog is short for weblog. A
weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated
and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally
represent the personality of the author or the Web site.


I recommend that you read lots of people's blogs to learn what
blogs are. Go to your favorite search engine and type in the
word 'blog' and the subject you're interested in. For example,
'web design blog', or 'blog music', or 'sports blog'. You'll
find lots of blogs that way.


Blogs have become a way in which regular, non-technical people
can post information to the Web as easily as they can access it.


Why Are Blogs So Important?


Well, they're not that important, yet. But they could be soon,
and most likely will be. In fact, some would argue that they are
already vital in today's Web business world. I am not ready to
agree to that yet, but it is becoming more obvious to me over
time that blogs can no longer be ignored in business.


Online businesses can benefit from blogging by taking advantage
of a vehicle for easily posting new, original, and
business-related content on a regular basis.


Here Are Some More Business Benefits Of Blogging:


* Blogs help to position you and/or your company as experts
and leaders in your industry.


* They're interactive in nature. At the end of each blog entry
is usually a link that allows anyone to add their own comments
to your blog entries. This allows your customers and potential
customers to make comments about your products or services or
ask you questions to help them in their buying process.


* Blogs are marketed easily and quickly by their RSS feeds.


* Blogs allow you to stress your choice of products, services,

How To Blog For Business:


First you need to get blogging software. You can choose to
create a blog that is housed on another site such as
http://www.blogger.com (which is a blog service) or you can
host it on your own Web server. I recommend the latter since
the links that are developed by others pointing to your blog
won't be counted in the search engines. This is because the
links are attributed to domains, so a link to
http://MyNewBlog.blogger.com gives a link credit to
blogger.com and not your domain.


If your blog is a business blog, you really ought to host your
own blog as opposed to using a blog service. You'll need the
extra functionality and control.


If you plan on hosting your own blog and if you plan to use a
UNIX Web server platform, then you need to go with blogging
software such as Movable Type, for example. If you have a
Microsoft Web server platform for your site, then you'll need
software such as BetaParticle blog. Here is a great list of

Next you'll need a database to hook your blog up to. The
database is what stores the blog entries, among other things. If
you don't know if you have a database on or connected to your
website server, or if you don't know how to hook up your blog to
your database, contact your host company or Web server
administrator for help.


Once you have the blog set up on your domain (for example
http://www.MyWebsite.com/blog) and you've hooked it up to a live
database, you can start blogging. Generally, each entry is also
a day. So you can write a new entry every day, or whenever you
want, and that entry will show up on the blog at the top, moving
older entries below.


You ought to think of a theme for your blog. In other words, your
blog could be about your personal experiences in the industry
you're in. It could be about your company's product reviews, or
new services. It could be about your thoughts and opinions about
issues related to your industry. It could be a place where you
regularly find and list new resources to help others in your
industry. The list is endless. But be sure to stick to a theme
and be original. You want to offer something of value to your
website visitors.


Sticking to a theme helps you position yourself for future
advertisers and also makes for better reading for your visitors.
Furthermore, you want to give a good impression with your blog
with each and every entry if you want it to augment your online
business. Finally, sticking to a theme helps with the search
engines since it's believed that engines determine website
themes and use this information for ranking.


Of course your blog could be about personal things too. Many
blogs are just that, an online journal. But since we're
interested in Web business here, I am discussing business blogs
only.


What's great is that blogs get indexed easily and quickly by
search engines. Each entry is another "page" that can be
potentially listed in Google for example, which will drive more
traffic to your site.


Another neat thing about running a blog once it's set up is that
you do not need to be technical at all to make regular entries.
This is helpful if you want to delegate the writing to someone
else, since technical skills won't be a prerequisite. This
allows you to have the most qualified person regarding the
blog's theme and, hopefully the best writer, actually making the
entries.


Be creative. Add images to your blog entries to spice things up a
bit. Although blogging can be lonely, keep at it. Sometimes it
seems like you're just writing new entries each day for yourself
only. It may be a while before someone chooses to add a comment
to one of your entries. You may not hear from anyone for a long
time. But that doesn't mean people aren't reading it. In fact,
check your website statistics to see just how many people are
visiting your new blog. As you add more entries, get your blog
listed on other sites and market your blog. It will build, and
eventually you'll have a nice following of engaged readers.


Most importantly, be sure to pepper your entries with calls to
action. For example, if your business blog is attached to your
travel website and the blog's theme is traveling and finding
great travel deals all over the world, make sure you add a link
to an entry that points people to a travel special you're
running on your website. What would be even better is a blog
entry about the fantastic vacation you took to Hawaii and
included at the end was a link to cheap Hawaii vacation deals on
your website.

Treat Yahoo as both a directory AND a search engine. Yahoo offers a number of different search
results. Part of their search results come from an actual search engine, and some of their results come from human editors, called surfers.

Every Yahoo directory submission is viewed by a person. (Search engines use spiders and indexing software). Admission into the Yahoo directory is entirely at the discretion of the Yahoo surfer viewing your site. That's why the free submission lead time can often be 8-10 weeks, without using the Express Submit service.

Unlike search engine submissions that accept multiple pages from the same site, Yahoo surfers prefer to view your home page, and they will navigate your site from there.

With directories, the site owner selects the most appropriate directory categories for his/her site and writes descriptions that concisely and accurately describe the content of the site. Factors that affect directory placement are selecting the right category and writing a good description.

Always differentiate between the Yahoo search engine and the Yahoo directory whenever you speak to a search engine marketer. The strategies for getting listed in search engines are different from the strategies for getting listed in directories.

Fill out the Forms on Yahoo Exactly as Requested

We know this seems obvious, but some sites don't get listed because the submitters do not follow directions when filling out the forms. When Yahoo asks for a phone number, give only one phone number including the area code. When Yahoo asks for a 25-words-or-less description, don't try any fancy word stacking or keyword tricks. Stick to a concise, accurate description of your site's
content. Yahoo surfers often change your site description after it's listed in their directory.

Although some fields are optional, try to fill in all of the fields in the form, especially the fields asking your company name, address, phone and fax numbers. Yahoo wants to know that you have a legitimate business that will be around in years to come.

Select the Categories (only 3) That You Want to be Listed Under Very Carefully

To select your categories, type in your selected keywords in a Yahoo query, and study the results. Your site does not belong where you believe your target audience is searching. Your site's actual content should accurately reflect the category or categories you wish to be listed under.

You will probably be listed under the same categories your competitors are listed under. Study your competitors' directory listing. See what their descriptions are, and then modify your site's description to show the Yahoo surfer that you definitely belong in the categories you selected.

If you are a U.S. company, under the category Regional/United States/ in Yahoo, all 50 states are listed. You should include your site in one of the regional categories, if applicable. Don't be surprised that most of your traffic from Yahoo is local. Many customers need to hear your voice or see your face to feel secure about hiring you or your company for a project.

Category listings are also at the discretion of a Yahoo surfer. You need to spend the time selecting your categories and studying your competitors so that you do not get listed under an "undesirable" category.

Have Unique Content and Point This Information Out in Your Submission

A web site is of no value to the Yahoo directory if the site contains the exact same information as other sites in the same categories. So to add value to the Yahoo directory, and to call attention to the unique aspects of your online business, make sure you have unique content on your site.

You can point out any unique content to the Yahoo surfer via your 25-word description or the extra comments field in the submission form.

Get a Virtual Domain Name

Yahoo tends to recognize virtual domains (http://www.yourcompany.com) over others. Why is this? Yahoo wants to have legitimate organizations and companies in their directory. They do not want a small start-up company that won't be around next year, thus resulting in a dead link to a URL in the directory. A virtual domain shows that you are serious about your business.

Try to Get Listed in One of Yahoo's Regional Directories First

At the bottom of Yahoo's home page are some of Yahoo's regional directories. If you are in one of the regional areas, you can often get your web site listed much faster in the regional directory than in Yahoo's main directory.

Commercial web sites must pay an annual fee of $299 (currently) to be listed in the Yahoo directory. Sometimes, a Yahoo surfer might discover a content-rich commercial site without you ever submitting.

Yahoo is looking for sites that download very quickly, preferably within 30 seconds on a dial-up modem.

Of course, exceptions do apply, such as if you are an online video game company and use Shockwave on your site. Then it is understandable that your web site might take longer to download.
Lastly, the rule "Content is King" applies to getting listed in Yahoo. If Yahoo editors don't feel your site looks or sounds like a legitimate business, they don't have to list your site. So make sure your web site is easy to read, easy to navigate, easy to find (on search engines), shows consistency in design and layout, and is quick to download. Above all, have unique content to add value to
the Yahoo directory.

First let us apologize for not keeping up with our blog this last month. Things have been a little hectic lately with the change of URL. Still trying to work out the bugs but getting closer to
completion.

The reason I am posting is because FINALLY Yahoo has done an amazing thing that each one of you need to check out immediately!! Google Sitemaps made easy. Can you believe it? I couldn't at first
either.

So the big question is...how did Yahoo make this easier on us? Let me show you!

Too busy to deal with it? Let us do it for you. Order the Google Sitemap Set Up here and in the comments area, give us your log in details for Google. We will also need access to your
site. We will set everything up for you and correct any errors in the Sitemap as well that Google shows.

First let us go to http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/services/ (You may have to sign in)

Now click on Store Manager.

Look at the left side bottom under Promote and you will see Search Engines. Click on it, it won't bite I promise!

Now look about half way down. You should see Create a Sitemap for your store Make sure you click enabled.

Now click Done.

This will take you back to the store manager page. There should now be a red star next to Publish Order Settings. Click on it and follow the directions to get it published. Once done we want to go back to the store manager and go back underneath Promote and click on Search Engines again.

Ok now we have to let Google know about this site map and they want you to verify your site. Now don't worry this is very easy!!!

Go to https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login

Log in using your Google Adwords account information. Register for new if you do not have one.

We want to add a site. Make sure to add your site url like this:

http://www.MYURL.com

Do not put in store.MYURL.com or yahoo.store.net/MYNAME

It MUST BE www....

Then you will need to get the file name to be verified from Google, provide the file name to Yahoo! to create the page for Google to verify, and then request verification from Google.

To get the Sitemap Verification file name:

  1. Sign in to your Google account.
  2. Click Verify.
  3. Select Upload an HTML file
    from the Choose a Verification method drop down.

  4. Copy the 22-digit file name provided
    by Google.

Google will check your site for an HTML file with the name they provide as verification of site ownership in the last step.

Now how do you add this .html page that Google wants? Follow these instructions:

Go into your store editor and make sure you are in advanced mode (You know you are in advanced mode when you see 2 lines of buttons. If you see only one line, click the red arrow at the end. This will get you into advanced mode)

Now click on contents. Click New. For the id put in the 22 digit number that Google gives you. DO NOT PUT IN .HTML!!! JUST THE 22 DIGIT NUMBER. For type click item. Now in the name field just put Google Verification page. Now click update. Click on variables and click update (this will make sure Yahoo does a full update of your store). Then publish your site. Once your publishing is completed, your 22 digit html page will be ready to give to Google for verification.

  1. At Google, select the two checkboxes to indicate you have created and can view the HTML file to verify.
  2. Click Verify.

Google will check to ensure you have created the page with the file name provided by them. If Google is unable to find the file, publish your Order Settings again as well as go into your store
editor and click on variables then update, and try to verify the page again.

Now the last step. Go back to:

https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount

Log in and click on Sitemaps

Verified should have a check under it (if not, click to verify)

Now click add a site map

You will need to provide the URL that Yahoo gave you for your new Site Map. If you have forgotten, go back to store manager, click on search engines, and you will see the URL about half way down.


It should look like this:

http://www.YOURURL.com/sitemap.xml

Click on Add General Web

And put in the URL that was given by Yahoo.


You will see pending until Google Verifies all is well.

The great part is that on one Google Account, you can add multiple store URLs. So make sure you add ALL of your stores.

If you have made it all the way, congrats on your new Google Sitemap. Grab a drink, site back, pat yourself on your back, then get back to work *wink*
