It is time to finish up what we started regarding recent changes to Yahoo’s search engine. For those of you who need to catch up:

We are now at Excessively cross-linking sites to inflate a site's apparent
popularity

Google really took care of this problem with the Jagger Update. Nice to see
Yahoo follow up as well. Basically if you are just adding links to have links so
that you can build your popularity, it is not going to work. Instead try
nonreciprocal links. They link to you but you do not link to them. Writing
articles is an inexpensive way to get good one way links to your store.

Pages built primarily for the search engines

Write for your customers and not for the search engines. They can tell when
keyword stuffing is going on and you will only be penalized for writing
horribly. Use Microsoft Word (or some other type of editing software) when
writing a lot of text and check for grammar and spelling.

Misuse of competitor names

This one used to be a big thing to do. Your competitors URL is MyUrL.com and
you buy MyUrl.net and use their name to get people in. Again it is a trick.
Search engines do not want to be tricked...Simple? Absolutely!

Multiple sites offering the same content

We keep telling business owners write unique content! But wait...this rule
does not apply to me. I don't build my site and then build 3 more exactly like
it. Well you see that is only half the problem. Over 75% of the websites we work
on are making this mistake. How? They have an item for sale. They go to the
manufacturer's page and copy the description. Easy and done. Here is the
problem...other companies do this too. And each company that does this is
another site offering the same content...including you.

Sites that use excessive pop-ups, interfering with user navigation


We have all visited one of "those" sites.

And finally.....the last one

Pages that seem deceptive, fraudulent or provide a poor user experience


Reread the entire page again right now. It all leads up to this last rule. Do
not deceive, fraud, or be annoying.
